Coins of the British Empire were the focus of a Showcase Auction of World Coins held by Heritage on 2 July.
From British India, the auction included a Queen Victoria gold mohur dating from 1841 (lot 21220).
Struck by the Madras mint on behalf of the East India Company, the reverse shows a lion striding to the left with a palm tree in the background – the symbol of the company.
The obverse features the bust of Queen Victoria, engraved by William Wyon, with the legend around it. Graded at MS 62, this example of a rarer Mohur type sold for $19,000 (approximately £15,000).
