The River Jordan is the second landmark to be featured in Israel Mint's Views of Israel coin series. The commemorative coin, designed by Meir Eshel, shows the Jordan River as it appears on the map, connecting the Sea of Galilee to the Dead Sea. The reverse carries a view of the River Jordan, with the Hermon Mountain range in the background.
The Jordan is the lowest river in the world and flows 250 kilometres from the north to the south of Israel. It has played key roles in both Jewish and Christian history. In the Old Testament, it was this river that the Israelites, led by Joshua, crossed to reach their promised land. Thousands of years later, the River Jordan was the baptism place of both John the Baptist and Jesus.
