Royal Canadian Mint has issued a new hologram silver coin which celebrates the Northern Lights. 'A story of the Northern Lights: the Great Hare' is a limited edition silver coin which pays tribute to a legend of the Algonquin people whose cultural hero Nanahboozho would shape shift into the shape of the 'Great Hare'.

The reverse of the coin shows the hare sitting beside a bonfire which, according to legend, he built after creating Turtle Island, to show his people that he was still thinking of them.

The coin was designed by Canadian artist Nathalie Bertin and the colourful lights of the Northern Lights are highlighted with a uniquely shaped hologram that mimics their movement in the night sky. The reverse is also engraved with the word 'CANADA', the date 2013 and the face value of twenty dollars.

To buy the coin, visit the Royal Canadian Mint website.
