New keeper of the Heberden Coin Room at Ashmolean

The Ashmolean Museum has announced that Dr Frédérique Duyrat, Director of the Department of Coins, Medals and Antiques at the Bibliothèque Nationale de France since 2015, will succeed Professor Chris Howgego as Director of Collections and Keeper of the Heberden Coin Room on 1 September.

Dr Duyrat, a specialist in Greek and Hellenistic numismatics, is a graduate of l’Institut Français D’Archéologie Du Proche-Orient in Damascus and of the Sorbonne. A lecturer in ancient history at the University of Orléans from 2001 to 2009, she joined the Bibliothèque Nationale in 2010 as head of Greek coins.

Dr Duyrat said ‘I am absolutely delighted to be joining the Ashmolean Museum. I look forward to working with museum colleagues and with the museum’s incredible collections to help further the Ashmolean’s mission to preserve, enhance and share its collections and knowledge to promote research, learning and enjoyment.’

Professor Howgego will remain with the Coin Room as Research Keeper, aiming to spend a significant part of his time on the Coin Hoards of the Roman Empire project.
