Great Lakes of Canada coin series launched by Royal Canadian Mint

The Great Lakes of Canada are celebrated with the launch of a five coin series from Royal Canadian Mint, beginning with Lake Superior. Canada's lakes are the world's largest system of fresh surface water and can be seen from the moon. Together, they comprise around twenty percent of the planet's fresh water supply.

The first coin in the series features Lake Superior, which is shown on the 1 oz silver coin as an enamel-filled lake, along with an interpretation of the bathymetric depths of the lake, provided by the Canadian Hydrographic Service.

The other Great Lakes coins will be issued as follows:

• Lake Ontario - March 2014
• Lake Erie - June 2014
• Lake Huron - October 2014
• Lake Michigan - February 2015
