Falkland Islands issues Magallenic Penguin coin as the penultimate in its 50p Penguin series

07 October 2018
Pobjoy Mint has announced the release of the penultimate coin in its five-coin Penguin 50p coin series, which features each of the five breeds of penguin resident on the Falkland Islands at some point each year.

The Cupro Nickel Diamond Finish coin features a colour head shot of a Magellanic Penguin, which is a summer resident of the Falkland Islands, returning each year to breed. They begin to arrive in early September, going back to the nest they left the previous year.

The adult Magellanic Penguin has conspicuous black & white bands on its head, neck and breast and also two black bands across the chest, with the lower band shaped like an upside-down horesehoe.

The obverse of the coin features Pobjoy Mint’s exclusive effigy of the Queen. Pobjoy Mint has also produced a collector’s album for this series, which gives facts and information about each of the five penguins.
