A new display at Glasgow's Hunterian Museum showcases medals manufactured in the aftermath of the Battle of Waterloo.
Over the course of a single day, 18 June 1815, Allied and Prussian forces comprehensively defeated the army of Napoleon Bonaparte, crushing the French emperor’s military ambitions and forcing him into exile. The battle was widely commemorated, particularly in medallic form.
The Centre for Battlefield Archaeology at the University of Glasgow has provided expert support for Waterloo Uncovered, an ongoing archaeological project involving military veterans and serving personnel suffering from injury or post-traumatic stress disorder.
This case display has been curated to support Waterloo Replayed, a world-record breaking wargame at the University of Glasgow, 15 – 16 June 2019, in support of Waterloo Uncovered.
The display is at The Hunterian until 25 August 2019 and admission is free.
