The new £2 coin features the Southern Constellation of Grus – Crane

The coin is the second in the Southern Constellation series of five £2 coins commemorating the bicentenary of the famous British astronomer Sir Frederick William Herschel.

The coin shows the Grus Constellation, in the Southern sky which is represented by a crane – the meaning of its Latin name. Grus contains three stars brighter than magnitude 3.0 and one star located within 10 parsecs (32.6 light years) of Earth. The new coin, issued by Pobjoy Mint on behalf of British Antarctic territory, features the constellation beneath an image of a crane, and a compass as it would read in Antarctica.

The coin is issued in Bimetal and Proof Fine Silver. The obverse features an effigy of Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth ll produced exclusively for Pobjoy Mint.
