Dating from c.25 BC–AD 10, one of the highlights from the recent Chris Rudd sale was a rare Tasciovanos gold stater of the Catuvellauni tribe from south-eastern Britain.
The obverse had ‘TASCIO RICON’ in two panels on a vertical wreath, which was described as one of the most impressive examples of proud, regal self-promotion to be seen in Europe’s late Iron Age coinage (lot 27).

The reverse featured a cavalryman riding bareback into action, charging to the left but turning backwards, wearing a wide-brimmed helmet, chain-mail armour and holding a sword and shield. A ringed pellet appeared below. It was found in Lichfield, Staffordshire, on 26 October 2014, which was over 100 miles from where it was minted.
The crisply struck 16–18mm coin, on a big flan of rose gold, exceeded its £3,000 estimate to achieve £3,400.
