The recent Ancient, Medieval and Milled British, World and Islamic Coins sale at Baldwins included one of the rarest coins of the Islamic world.

This gold dinar of AD 971–72 was extremely rare, being struck by the Fatimids in the holy city of Makkah (lot 820).

After a period of instability, the Fatamids established a strong presence in Makkah after AD 968, with the authority of Fatimid Caliph al-Mu’izz (AD 953–75) officially recognised in both Makkah and Madina in AD 974.

This made the coin on offer, one of the so-called bullseye types, one of the few coins in the name of al-Mu’izz that was minted in Makkah before 974.

This coin went under the hammer for £40,000.
