The Dallas Signature sale held by Heritage on 16–19 November included many American rarities, including a gold 1861 $1 from the Dahlonega mint.

One of the most interesting was a gold 1861 $1 from the Dahlonega mint, which was produced by the Confederate States of America after the mint was seized in the spring of 1861 during the Civil War (lot 3114).

It is believed that 1,000 to 1,500 examples were struck by the regular mint personnel, who continued to perform their duties under the control of the Confederacy. A single pair of dies was used to strike all the coins, with the obverse die being leftover from 1860.

As well as its historical significance, this 1861 coin is the most elusive gold dollar from the Dahlonega mint, with an estimated 65–75 examples known, of which only a dozen or so are in mint condition.
