The Premier Sale of British and World Coins, Medals, Numismatic Literature at St James’s on 8 November included several gold coins from the reign of Elizabeth I.
The highlight of these was an Elizabeth I ‘crown gold’ pound from the sixth issue (1583–1600), which featured a crowned bust of an older queen, with long flowing hair and a richly ornamented dress on the obverse (lot 75).

The reverse had a crowned shield of arms, with ‘E’ and ‘R’ on either side. The inscription ‘SCVTVM FIDEI PROTEGET EAM’ (the shield of faith shall protect her), which was a religious sentiment first used on the gold of Edward VI, had the annulet stops, denoting the Woolpack mintmark of the Tower mint that was in use 9 May 1594 to 13 February 1596.
Graded as MS 63, this well-centred coin exceeded its estimate of £50,000–£60,000 to go under the hammer for £64,000.
