The Royal British Legion has commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme with two limited edition £5 coins.

This summer marks the centenary of the First World War’s bloodiest battle, which lasted from1 July to 18 November, 1916, causing death or injury to more than one million soldiers.

To commemorate the sacrifices made by so many servicemen, the Royal British Legion has released the two coins, each of which features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the reverse. The sterling silver coin carries a scene from the Somme below a single red poppy, whilst the cupro-nickel version has a Somme scene with a field of colourful poppies in the foreground.
