The Royal Australian Mint has secured approval from Buckingham Palace for the design of its new coin to celebrate the birth of Prince George of Cambridge. The fine silver 50c Proof coin has been issued ahead of the christening of Prince George, the first child of Prince William and Kate Middleton (the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge) which is expected to take place this autumn.

The coin features a family tree with the initials ‘W’ and ‘C’ above ‘HRH Prince George Born 22.07.2013’, and was designed by the Royal Australian Mint after 'extensive consultation' with Buckingham Palace. An uncirculated cupro nickel coin is also available. Bernie Ripoll MP, parliamentary secretary to the treasurer, said: 'The arrival of His Royal Highness Prince George of Cambridge is an important moment in history. We’ve seen many Australians happy to celebrate the birth of Prince George.

'Many Australians embrace the royal celebrations so it is fitting that the Royal Australian Mint recognises this happy event on our currency.'

To order the coin, visit the Royal Australian Mint website.
