The Royal Australian Mint has issued a $5 silver coin featuring the Southern Cross constellation. ...

The coin, which is the first Australian coin devoted exclusively to the Southern Cross, is a coloured, domed 39.2 mm, 1 ounce coin featuring the five main stars of the Southern Cross:

  • Alpha
  • Beta
  • Gamma
  • Delta Crucis
  • Epsillon Crucis

The Southern Cross (also known as Crux) has featured in Australia's culture and history for thousands of years - it was studied by the Aboriginal people and has been known for centuries as a way to identify True South.
