Israel has released details of special coins from the Bank of Israel issued to mark the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. The face value of the coin, designed by David Harel, carries the words 'New Sheqalim' in Hebrew and English; the word 'Israel' in Hebrew, English and Arabic; the Israel State Emblem; and the mint year (2013 and 5773 in Hebrew characters). Centered in the lower part of the coin is the mint mark. Upper left is a football pictured as the globe in orbit, 'evoking the international nature and dynamics of the FIFA Games'.

The reverse of the coin was designed by Igal Gabay and shows a ball in a net. The coin is available in gold, silver and silver proof and as a three-coin set.

Israel has a strong association with the sport of football, having first played in World Cup qualifiers in 1934, when a Jewish delegation from Palestine sent a team. This delegation was the forerunner of the Israel National team, which over the years, has taken part regularly in  FIFA World Cup qualifying matches. Israel also plays in European competitions as a full member of UEFA.

To purchase the coins, visit the Israel Mint website.
