Perth Mint Australia looks back at the 1851 Gold Rush in Australia with a 1oz Silver Proof coin.

The coloured coin is the first in a new 'Land Down Under' series and is legal tender in Australia. It features a prospector panning for gold on a riverbank, framed within a shape of Australia, with the words 'Land Down Under'.

THE AUSTRALIAN GOLD RUSH

The Australian Gold Rush, which began in the year 1851, changed Australia forever. For many, the Australian national identity is bound up in memories of the comradeship and disdain for authority displayed by the early gold prospectors. The first gold in Australia was discovered in 1851 by Edward Hargraves. This discovery, made in a waterhole at Bathurst, convinced Hargraves of the geological similarities between Australia and California, a discovery which landed him with a £10,000 reward and a lifetime pension.

Within months of Hargraves's discovery, thousands of prospectors were engaged in searching for gold, with 370,000 immigrants arriving in Australia and the nation's economy at an all time high. Within twenty years, the country's population had trebled, setting a precedent for more than a century of immigration to come.
