The United States Mint pays tribute to one of the oldest Armed Force of the US with a bicentennial bronze medal.
The US Marine Corps was established by Congress on 10 November 1775, making it one of the oldest of the nation's armed forces.
The Corps was established as a fighting force to assist the 13 colonies during the American Revolution and is now one of the seven uniformed services of the United States. Its motto is semper fidelis (always loyal).
The obverse depicts the first major action of the Continental Marines, the landing at New Providence in the Bahamas on 3 March 1776. The emblem of the Corps, the eagle, globe and anchor are superimposed on the scene. The reverse depicts the role of the modern Marine in action.
