The legendary long-distance Ghan railway service celebrates its 90th anniversary this year, and Royal Australian Mint has issued a 50c coloured uncirculated coin for this landmark moment.
The steam train service began in 1929, transporting passengers the 1,851 miles from Adelaide to Darwin, operating through fire, flood and drought.
From Adelaide to Darwin, Great Southern Rail’s Ghan passes on a 54-hour journey through magnificent and beautiful landscapes from the desert to the tropics. The Ghan nickname is believed to be an abbreviated version of the original name of the service: The Afghan Express.
