Four generations of the British Royal Family, whose lives span 87 years, are celebrated on new coins issued by The Royal Mint.
The Four Generations of Royalty 2018 coins celebrate the line to the throne from Queen Elizabeth II (born in 1926), the heir to the throne Prince Charles (born 1948), the queen's grandson Prince William (born 1982) and great-grandson Prince George (born 2013). This is only the second time in British history that a monarch and three heirs to the throne are known to have lived at the same time - previously Queen Victoria was pictured with the future Edward VII, Edward VIII and George V.
The reverse of the coin, designed by heraldic artist Timothy Noad, features the initials E, C, W and G - for the first names of each member of the four generations - along with the wording Four Generations of the Royal Family 2018. Timothy has worked on many coin and medal projects for The Royal Mint, including the 2013, 2014, and 2015 £1 coins, the House of Windsor Centenary coin, and The Queen’s Golden and Diamond Jubilee Medals.
The year 2018 is set to be a bumper one for royal fans, with two royal weddings and the birth of a third child for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the 65th anniversary of the Coronation, 70th birthday of Prince Charles, as well as the Queen and other members of the royal family carrying out engagements around the UK and overseas.
