The Royal Mint have revealed the new 50p coins featuring The Snowman, the character created by Raymond Briggs forty years ago, with silver proof, gold proof and brilliant uncirculated versions available.

The new coin, issued to mark the story's fortieth anniversary and released in time for Christmas, features an image of the Snowman with his new friend James, as they soar across the sky.

The Royal Mint website confirms: 'This coin will not appear in circulation – this is the only way to own The Snowman coin.'

The reverse of the coin was designed by Natasha Ratcliffe, a member of the Council of the British Art Medal Society, whose designs were chosen to feature on 50p coins released to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2010.

Natasha said:

'Growing up, I remember reading The Snowman and sitting down on Christmas Day to watch the animated version was something of a family tradition. When I was asked to create a design for this new series I was excited, but also nervous as I know the story means so much to people and the illustrations are a huge part of that.

'I hope fans, old and new will appreciate the new design and enjoy unwrapping them as they watch or read The Snowman this year.

The Brilliant Uncirculated 50p coin is being sold for £10, with the silver version, which also features a coloured version of the design, priced at £60. The gold coin, limited to just 400 copies, is 100% reserved.

Nicola Howell, Director of Consumer Coin at The Royal Mint said:

'We are thrilled to be a part of the 40th anniversary celebrations of Raymond Briggs’ book The Snowman

'Over the past few years, the Beatrix Potter and Paddington collections have been incredibly popular with our collectors and we believe this stunning flying scene depicting The Snowman and James captured on a commemorative 50 pence coin will be equally well treasured by children and adults alike.'

The Royal Mint website describes the famous story:

'On a cold winter’s night, a snowman comes to life and befriends the little boy who built him – it’s the start of a magical adventure. They fly high across the frozen countryside down to Brighton Pier, then race home to beat the dawn, but wonder turns to sadness. The next morning, the boy wakes to find his snowman has melted. Sharing this timeless story has become a much-loved part of Christmas, a family tradition that signals the start of the festive season.'
