Pobjoy Mint has issued the first commemorative coin to mark the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, on 19 May 2018.

Pobjoy Mint has issued the first commemorative coin to mark the wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle at St George’s Chapel, Windsor, on 19 May 2018.

Following the announcement last November of the engagement of HRH Prince Henry of Wales to Ms Meghan Markle, it was announced earlier this year that the couple will marry on Saturday 19 May at noon.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are keen to allow members of the public to be involved in the celebrations and so not only will the wedding be televised live, but thousands of people will be able to watch the carriage procession make its way to St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle, where the wedding ceremony will be held, followed by a lunchtime reception hosted by the queen, and an evening reception hosted by Prince Harry’s father, Prince Charles.

In addition, 2,640 members of the public have been invited to the grounds of Windsor Castle. 1,200 of these special invitations will come from nominations from the nine regional Lord Lieutenants, ensuring that the whole of the United Kingdom is included. These special invitations will allow the recipients to watch the arrival of all the guests as well as the bride and groom.

The royal wedding coin design

The coin, which is available in proof sterling silver and uncirculated cupro nickel, has an obverse design which features the initials of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry – M&H – in the centre, surrounded by a ribbon supported by four cherubs, with the wedding date, 19 May 2018, displayed on the ribbon.

A fifth cherub can be seen flying above blowing a fanfare in celebration of the wedding. The obverse of the coin features an effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II produced exclusively by Pobjoy Mint.
