Bank of Estonia will issue a new €2 commemorative coin in January 2020, to mark the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica.

The design, which features the ship Vostok in which Admiral von Bellingshausen sailed around the world, will appear on the reverse of the national €2 coin, designed by graphic artists Tiiu Pirsko and Mati Veermets.

The forthcoming 200th anniversary has special significance to Estonia, as seafarer Fabian Gottlieb Benjamin von Bellingshausen who was the first known person to sight the coastline of Antarctica, was born in Saaremaa, Estonia's largest island. He went on to write Double Investigation of the Southern Polar Ocean and the Voyage Around the World.

Artists Tiiu Pirsko and Mati Veermets have previously designed the gold coin dedicated to the centenary of the Republic of Estonia, a coin folder in 2011, and the silver collector coin for the Song Celebration in 2009.
