A new commemorative silver penny has been issued to mark the birth of Archie Harrison Mountbatten-Windsor, the first child of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex - Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.
Crossing a baby’s palm with silver is an age-old tradition, which is seen as a way to wish a new child wealth and good health throughout their life.
The Silver Penny is year dated 2019, the year of the baby’s birth, alongside the portrait of the child’s great grandmother, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. The Royal Mint’s commemorative Silver Penny is available from The Royal Mint's website.
Nicola Howell, Director of the Consumer Division at The Royal Mint said: “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s story has captured the attention of the nation and as the Royal Family’s family tree expands, we’d like to welcome the newest member to their family and celebrate this joyful occasion with a 2019 dated Silver Penny. “
