The English section of the recent London Coins auction featured a rare 1694 five guineas piece with 'much detail and eye appeal', and a £5 gold proof crown from 2018 which fetched £2,000.
A 1694 Five Guineas was one of the highlights of the English section of the sale.
The lot description stated: 'The coin displays much detail and eye appeal… A high grade example with excellent portraits, indeed the obverse is a bold even strike with the only significant wear being on the highest hair curl. With low grade and/or damaged Five Guineas now realising £5000-£6000, this being several grades above represents very good value in today's market at the low estimate.'
SOLD FOR £15,000
An 1845 Crown with Cinquefoil Stops on edge ESC 282, was also on offer. The coin featured 'attractive toning over original mint lustre, a few small rim nicks barely detract, the obverse sharply struck with crisp hair and ribbon detail… overall a high quality example with superb eye appeal, would be ideal for the type collector.'
SOLD FOR £3,400
Modern coins on offer included a gold proof 2014 Commonwealth Games - Glasgow 50p piece, one of only 233 pieces issued, and said to be 'one of the lowest mintage figures of any of the modern Gold Fifty Pence Proofs'.
SOLD FOR £650
A £5 gold proof Crown issued in 2018 to mark the fifth birthday of Prince George was also sold. The description said: 'Spink catalogue states a mintage of only 175 pieces, these all being issued in sets, Crown collectors now have this opportunity to purchase this as a single coin.'
